Kiefer Sutherland: 24 Finale Isn’t About Saving the Planet

“Damn It!” Tonight will be the last time we hear Jack Bauer utter those famous words amidst frustration and chaos when he takes down the bad guys for the billionth time. The series finale of  “24” is upon us and fans are trying their best to brace themselves for the events that are about to take place. Do you think it will be a cut and dry ending or will it be left open for interpretation like ABC’s “Lost?”

At 8pm, Fox will air a two-hour finale wrapping up their 8 season run of Jack Bauer and his off the wall antics. The character’s portrayer, Kiefer Sutherland recently spoke about what we can expect from tonight’s episode and whether or not it will go out with a bang.

What’s interesting is how it almost goes back to year one, where it’s not about saving the planet. It’s not about a nuclear bomb. It’s not about any of these things. It becomes about two characters. It was much more moving than I had ever anticipated, and for the people that I know who have seen it, I think they felt the same way.

It sounds like the writers plan on coming full circle, returning to what made the show a phenomenon in the first place.  We know a lot of you have your own theories as to how it should end so tell us what you think. We’re interested in knowing what would be a satisfactory ending for those of you who have dedicated 8 years of your life to this show.

Britney Spears Ousts Ashton Kutcher as Twitter King

Last year, Ashton Kutcher beat CNN to a million followers on Twitter, proclaiming himself the King of All Social Media. Okay, the first part is true anyway?

Since then, he's enjoyed his perch as the undisputed leader in total fans on the micro-blogging site ... until today, when Britney Spears surpassed him.

Yup, Brit has opened up a 4,950,699-4,944,227 lead. Ashton's response? He does not care. Fittingly, he Twittered his response to playing second fiddle:

He wrote: "2nd most pop Q 'What do U think about Brittney having more followers than u?' Answer 'I don't care. Aren't u suppose 2B a movie reporter?'"

Ashton Twittered this during a press junket for his and Katherine Heigl's new movie Killers. Seems like he's taking it in stride ... or is secretly bitter.

As for Britney, she celebrated her reign by actually Twittering: "WOW!!!!! #1 on Twitter! Thank you! Tweet me some questions this morning! xoxo -Brit"

This is surprising and yet not. Surprising because Britney's Twitter is boring and rarely written by her. It's usually her manager writing some BS story.

It's not surprising in the sense that Britney Spears is a bigger star than Ashton Kutcher, and one of the most famous people alive ... for better or worse.

Either way, if we were Britney, we wouldn't get too comfortable. There are other threats to the crown who aren't even on Twitter yet. One word: Bieber.

Jesse James: I think I wanted to get caught

Nightline is releasing segments of their Jesse James interview in drips and drabs and they’re surely getting plenty of press for it. On Friday we saw a preview of widdle Jessie admitting he cheated, then crying and walking off set. Today we’re hearing more from the 41 year-old motorcycle mogul, including the tidbit that he feels that he was self sabotaging his great life by banging strippers (not his exact terminology) and that he still loves and cares about the wife he so publicly wronged, Sandra Bullock.

Jesse James says he knew Sandra Bullock would catch him cheating sooner or later â€" and that he wanted to be caught, because deceiving her sickened him.

“When I was doing it, you know, one, I knew it was horrible, it made me feel horrible,” James tells ABC’s Nightline in an interview airing Tuesday. “And two, I knew I would get caught eventually, and I think I wanted to get caught. … It was me trying to self-sabotage my life.”

Asked why he’d hurt someone who was â€" and he says still is â€" the most important person in his life, James is at a loss for words. “It’s hard for me to talk about, a little bit, because I still really love her and care about her,” he says.

But the West Coast Choppers owner, 41, is under no illusions about the level of that hurt. “I’ve spent my whole life with the kids and with her trying to … protect her from everything, but the most hurt she’s ever been caused is by the person that wanted to protect her,” he says.

In an earlier promo for the show, James admits: “I took a pretty amazing life and marriage … and threw it away.”

Allegations of James’s infidelity emerged shortly after Bullock, 45, won an Oscar for her leading role in The Blind Side in March.

In the Nightline interview, James will also address whether Bullock knew anything about his affairs, what he really went to rehab for, and what role â€" if any â€" will he play in the life of Bullock’s adopted son, Louis.

I asked my friend Eyes for Lies to view this video and comment on it. She runs the blog Eyes for Lies and is a certified truth expert like the experts portrayed on Lie to Me. She wrote “I get the distinct feeling watching that interview that he wanted out of the marriage in the worst way and he sabotaged it on purpose! He admits to wanting to get caught. Did he love himself more than Sandra? The evidence seems to say so.” A lot of men do that and don’t have the balls to admit the truth even after they’re caught. Instead they beg their wives to take them back and then blame them for not giving them a chance when they’re the ones who ruined their marriages in the first place.

This is somewhat prejudiced of me, but James’ California drawl makes him sound a bit dull. On someone else I would interpret it as laid back, but he seems slow to me and I find his voice annoying. He’s all “I hurt her,” “I think I wanted to get caught,” but all I hear is a guy who is going through the motions. Maybe he’s all broken up about it, but I just get the impression that he’s proud of what he did. I could be wrong, but it’s like he’s bragging that he took down America’s Sweetheart and not like he’s apologizing. The good news is that Nightline’s Vicki Mabrey says that the divorce is 100% moving forward. She adds that James told her the public was harder on him than Sandy, though. Poor, misunderstood Jesse.

He’s trying to win public sympathy by saying yes I did wrong. It’s hurting him more where it hurts the most… in his pocket. Jessie should date women his own kind like the ones from LA Ink or the porn stars he is used to. I hope Sandra finds a good man who will love her and her son above anything else.

Ronan Keating has allegedly admitted to cheating on his wife

The Boyzone singer â€" who yesterday announced he and his spouse Yvonne were separating after 12 years of marriage â€" was reportedly kicked out the family home on Monday (May 17, 2010) following a furious row where he admitted to being unfaithful to her during his recent solo tour.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Yvonne was heartbroken but she made her mind up on the spot. The cracks were there already, but this was the final straw. She isn’t the sort of person to forgive and forget. Ronan has accepted her decision.”

Ronan and the former model â€" who married in 1998 â€" have known each other since they were youngsters and have three children, Jack, 11, Marie, nine, and Ali, four, together.

It has been reported the hunky pop star was unfaithful with a backing dancer â€" rumored to be pretty blonde Francine Cornell â€" who is now in discussions to sell her story.

Last night (May 20, 2010), friends of the couple were shocked by the news of their split.

One pal told the Daily Star newspaper: “It is hard for the wife of any pop star when they go off on tour. The separation can take its toll on relationships. Situations that normally would not arise can get out of proportion. We hope Ronan and Yvonne can get through this.”

Boyzone manager Louis Walsh â€" who has known the pop star since his career began in 1993 â€" was also stunned by the news.

He said: “I didn’t see it coming at all. Ronan and Yvonne have always been very close. They were a great couple and spent their time together. It’s come as a total surprise to everyone.”

The pair apparently had blazing rows on Tuesday (May 18, 2010) and discussed their separation with their young children before Ronan was spotted being driven away from the family home in tears yesterday.

Kirsten Dunst Heads Out Of France

Kirsten Dunst was spotted at the airport in Nice, France today. The actress is heading out of the country after spending several days at the Cannes Film Festival.

I'm guessing she's gearing up to get back to work. She has 3 projects in the works right now, one of them already filming.

Rogue Thailand general dead

Rogue Thailand general who backed protests dies.

Renegade Thai general Khattiya Sawasdipol, who was shot on Thursday as he backed protesters in Bangkok, has died, hospital officials have said.

The announcement came amid fresh fighting between the protesters and soldiers after Thai officials rejected a demand for UN-backed talks.

The government has called on protesters to leave the camp by 1500 (0800 GMT), saying the area is no longer safe.

Thirty-six people have been killed in the violence since Thursday.

Maj Gen Khattiya, known as Seh Daeng (Commander Red), was shot in the head on Thursday as he spoke to a New York Times journalist within the protesters' rally site.

He had been in a critical condition in hospital and had not been expected to pull through.

His shooting marked the beginning of clashes between soldiers and protesters that have raged on-and-off since then.

It is not clear who shot him, but some among the protesters were quick to blame army snipers.

A minute's silence was held for the general at the protesters' camp in the Ratchaprasong district, with some demonstrators in tears.

'A lot of shooting'

About 5,000 people remain in the encampment in Ratchaprasong, where food and water are running low amid a blockade on the area.

In a television announcement, the government told protesters - particularly women, children and the elderly - to leave the camp by mid-afternoon, or face the prospect of two years in jail.

The protesters have been offered free transport home, but there are conflicting reports over whether they are taking up the government's offer of safe passage.

Hundreds of women and children have sought refuge in a nearby temple.

The fresh fighting overnight along a street of upmarket hotels saw the first death among the soldiers, officials said.

Guests at one of the hotels, the Dusit Thani, were rushed from their rooms into the building's basement after gunfire and explosions shook the area.

"Everybody was evacuated from their room and spent the night in the basement," a photographer for the Reuters news agency said. "There was a lot of shooting."

Besides the deaths, about 200 people have been injured in the clashes. Previous violence since the protests began in March has left more than 60 people dead and at least 1,600 wounded.

The Dusit Thani hotel is across from Lumpini Park in a district of expensive hotels, embassies and shopping malls that has been taken over by the protesters.

Army sharpshooters behind sand-bagged barricades have been firing live rounds at protesters.

Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said troops were "not using weapons to crack down on civilians". He said armed "terrorists" among the protesters were being targeted.

The protesters, called red-shirts after the colour they have adopted, have been throwing stones, petrol bombs and fireworks at the soldiers and setting barricades of tyres on fire.

There have been reports that some among them are armed.

The latest fighting broke out after the government rejected a call from a red-shirt leader, Nattawut Saikua, to hold UN-moderated talks to end the stand-off, providing the army withdrew from the area around the red-shirt camp.

Panitan Wattanayagorn insisted that no outside help was needed, and said on Monday the government would consider talks with the protesters if they are "sincere" about peace.

"The government is ready to go forward with negotiation when the situation is defused, when the protest ends, violence ends and attacks on authorities end," he said.

On the violence of The Killer Inside Me, and empathy: “I was shocked too. But I don’t like watching myself on the big screen at the best of times. I hardly recognised myself in this one. I’d gained a little weigh. I wasn’t working out… because right before then I had been working out a lot and had become super muscular, which I didn’t like either. It wouldn’t have been right for that part, I wanted to look plainer. Not glamorous. Small town. There is something kind of masochistic about her. That’s a proper word? Someone who can empathise?’ I nod. ‘I love that! As I entered my thirties I realised I was an empath. A noun.”

On her death scene in The Killer Inside Me: “Yes, but you prepare for a movie like this in the same way you would any movie. I’ve never seen anyone die but I did nearly choke to death once, when I was 12, on a fireball that blocked my windpipe. And there was another time when I was winded after falling off a horse. You know, struggling for breath. So I tried to draw on those experiences to make my death scene look convincing.”

On being spanked by Casey Affleck for the film: “Ha! There were a couple in there when I thought: God, Casey! He got a bit of power behind it. It was definitely real. I think it depends on your sense of humour where you draw your boundaries. After about the 20th spank we all started to laugh because you become quite comfortable with the idea and it becomes about the technical side of things. I’ve known Casey for so long that you can’t help but laugh every now and then.”

On body image: “I’m pretty comfortable with my body. I’m imperfect. The imperfections are there. People are going to see them, but I take the view you only live once and, hey, I’m getting spanked today! And I’m working with Michael Winterbottom, who is an amazing director. Not sure, but the older I get the more I am OK with it. When I was younger I felt I had to apologise for being so happy, for not seeing things in a negative way.”

On letting her son see some films: “I normally take him on the set with me, but not for that one. ‘Mummy is going to be naked on the bed, smoking and getting spanked in the next scene, honey!’ I guess it will be weird for him when he does eventually watch it. I had to watch my dad die in films. I was 13 when I saw Backdraft and I was bawling.”

What her mom and step dad taught her about sex: “My brothers might feel differently about it but, for me, I felt my parents laid it out for us pretty well. We always had a good perspective about sex. When you grow up with parents in showbiz who are loud and funny and the life of the party, you get pretty relaxed about that stuff.”

On the cries of nepotism: “Well, for a while I felt I had to apologise for it, at the beginning of my career. I didn’t want to talk about it. Cameron Crowe [the director of her first film] was asked by the press if he knew my parents when he cast me. He said: “So what, it’s like Goldie and Kurt turned up demanding I cast their daughter? It doesn’t work like that.”’

On dating other actors: “I think when you have one person in a relationship who is an actor and the other isn’t that can be difficult, because the one who isn’t wonders whether the one who is, is acting. But when you have two people who are actors that doesn’t happen so much because they both understand about creative space. You know where it begins and ends. You know acting is not normality, that you have to be a little dysfunctional to be an actor. You know you could be laughing one minute and then crying the next, because a director has asked you to cry. That’s not normal behaviour.”

On the paparazzi and media focus on her personal life: “I can disappear, though. There is a way not to draw attention to yourself. If I want to draw attention to myself, put on heels and a tight dress and do my hair up, then I can. But I can also tone it down. For me I’d go crazy if I couldn’t go out and walk in the streets. I learnt some of that from my mum. She is so recognisable. She’s just so Goldie! When I was a girl I would get embarrassed and say: “Mum, put a hat on or something.” I hate it [when the paparazzi stalk me]. It’s so invasive. I went through a phase where it really affected me. You know, there might be a picture of you with your butt hanging out of your dress and you think what has that got to do with my work? But it’s not just the long lens, it’s what they say to you up close, the most horrible things, in front of my son. There have been days when I have been in three different tabloids, writing about me being in three different relationships, with people I haven’t even met. It’s that bad!”

Nicole has been very open about how her priorities have changed since having two-year-old daughter Harlow and son Sparrow, eight months with fiance Joel Madden.

I hope little Devan finds a match. It's always nice to see celebrities using their fame to bring attention to a good cause!

David Fincher, Timur Bekmambetov Directing 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

Either studios don’t pay attention to their competitors upcoming slates or Fox and Disney just don’t give a damn. The two powerhouses are both producing adaptations of the Jules Verne classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with David Fincher and Wanted’s Timur Bekmambetov in talks to direct. Does anyone else see a problem with this?

On Saturday, THR reported that Fincher would take on directing duties for Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which has been hanging in limbo ever since McG’s departure months ago. After being on hold indefinitely the studio had a change of heart tapping Fincher and Bourne Ultimatum scribe Scott Z. Burns to create a fresh take on the story.

On the other side of town, Fox just couldn’t let the House of Mouse have all the fun so they are also tackling the story of Captain Nemo and his Nautilus but with Bekmambetov. The studio is well aware that they’ll have to bring out the big guns to compete with Disney and Fincher, so they’ve brought on Ridley and Tony Scott to produce and the screenplay will be adapted by Clash of the Titans co-writer Travis Beacham.

Even though Fox has the Scott brothers as producers, Disney has a better screenwriter with Burns. Who will win? If you’re wondering what legal red tape the studios had to go through to use Vernes’ material there wasn’t any. The story is in public domain, which means a 5 year old could go and make a movie version of it if they wanted to.
